I’m a creature of habit, I am systematic on long run and race days. These are my go to items.
Before
Coffee is a must. It wakes me up, gives me energy, and is comforting. I drink it as I’m getting ready to calm my nerves.
During
Fuel is so important. I’ve started using more on long runs, and it makes a huge difference. I’ve tried several kinds, and the two I can tolerate are
Clif Shot Blocks: I eat 1/2 a package every 4 miles or so. I’ve only tried Strawberry, but they are good.
I also like Gatorade Chews, Cool Blue is my favorite. I can easily grab some Gatorade chews at work, so these are an easy go to option! I do about 1/2 a pack every 4 miles.
After
Fuzzy socks are my favorite thing to wear after a long run. After all the pounding on my feet, I wrap them in warmth and softness. I usually wear them with compression tights.

My favorites include a bowl of oatmeal before a long run, Shot Bloks during, chocolate milk and hop in the pool (obviously during the summer, hot shower works well in the winter) post work-out. Not so sure the pink socks would look that great on me but my wife would sure like them…My oldest son would probably fight her for them, pink is “cool” now for the boys!

For long races, I love having a whole wheat bagel or toast with PB, during I use Energybits, and after I refuel with a protein smoothie! And I like on FB 🙂
My before is definitely a cup of coffee, and a banana or english muffin (they have banana english muffins right now- yum!) , during I have found that Gu Gels, or Honey Stinger chews are yummy and work well, and afterwards I go for a protein shake and mexican.
I love to have a banana and peanut butter sandwich after working out, plenty of water during and before i usually eat a apple.
Coffee is definitely my favorite pre run item, during run I love, love, love Huma Gels and after depending on time of day and temperature could be chocolate milk or an ice cold beer and my Zensah compression socks.

I love my ipod during a workout! And afterward, I am a huge fan of a shower followed by a soft towel and super-soft sweatpants!

My favorite item after a long run is a heating pad to soothe my achy back or other large muscles.

I usually fuel up with pineapple or an apple, hydrate with water or nuun during, and enjoy a nice brunch of a veggie omelet, coffee and a crossword on the couch after

I know I should eat something before I work out but it makes me sick if I do so a piece of fruit is usually the most I eat. During I stick with water and After I eat cheese or lunch meat.

Before – a hot coffee, during – water and yaktrax (i live in a snowy area), after – a hot shower and sauna.
Before a run or race I like to keep it light like a banana and/or half a bagel. I haven’t run farther than 5 miles so during I usually have water with a nuun tablet in it or just water. Afterwards I like to have something like a vitamin water, chocolate milk and something with protein. I follow your blog too!

I never eat before running – it just doesn’t work for me. During – I need my IPOD and after – lots of water and stretching.
