Where to stay

23 01 2014

With Disney Princess Half Marathon a month away, let’s talk where to stay in Disney World?

As a vacation club member, we have made Disney a pretty regular vacation destination. We have stayed at several DVC resorts, each have pros and maybe a con. Staying in a DVC villa is great for a family, or when traveling with several people. We usually go with my parents. A 2 bedroom villa gives us plenty of room, a full kitchen and a washer and dryer. I love coming home with a suitcase full of clean clothes! This is especially good when someone runs,no one wants to bring home dirty, sweaty running clothes.

Disney’s Boardwalk and Beach club

I’m putting these two different resorts together, as far as location they might as well be the same. But please note the Beach Club pool is only for guests staying at the Beach/Yacht club.

LOCATION you are in walking distance to both Epcot (the world showcase entrance) and Hollywood Studios
Boats to Epcot and Hollywood studios if you don’t want to walk
Viewing of illuminations, Epcots fireworks
Beach Club pool, I can’t find a good picture. But this is one of the best, if not the best pool in Disney World. There is a great pirate ship slide.
The Marathon runs right by the hotel, it’s a great place to cheer the runners on as they finish

The Boardwalk has an odd set up. There isn’t a real lobby, all the stores and restaurants on outside, this can be tricky on a cold or raining day.

Old Key West

This is the oldest DVC resort, and according to someone I once spoke with, the villas are the largest.

Boat service to Downtown Disney
Several pools
Large villas
You CAN walk to Downtown Disney, it’s a decent walk, but do able
Apparently you can also walk to the Epcot parking lot for the start of races

Very large complex (see bus comment on Saratoga Springs)
Not exceptionally close to any park

Saratoga Springs and Treehouse villas

Technically these are separate, but they are also the same. The treehouse villas are at Saratoga Springs, but not all of Saratoga Springs is a treehouse.

Walking distance to Downtown Disney (boat service as well)
Treehouse is very private, it’s like camping, but you have running water, and a warm cozy place, trees everywhere, a porch, lots of space
Several good pools!
I’m not sure how the spa and fitness center are now, last year they were changing management, but it has been a great spa and gym

Not very close to any park
Large complex (several bus stops, so not everyone is waiting in one spot/you don’t have to track across the whole complex to get a bus)

Animal Kingdom Lodge
Please google images, it is beautiful!!!

Great pool
Great African buffet
Safari view is worth extra money
Lots to do on property
Bus service is fast to parks

Not walking distance to any park

Bay Lake Towers
Located at Contemporary resort

Walking distance to Magic Kingdom
Monorail service
Viewing of Wishes, fireworks at Magic Kingdom
Viewing of the electric parade on the lake
Half and full marathon run by the hotel on the way into Magic Kingdom, it’s fun to cheer the runners here!
Top of the World lounge is great, perfect place to watch fireworks, have a fun beverage and delicious snack

Connected to Contemporary via an outdoor walk way…can be windy

All the resorts are wonderful, I struggled to come up with a con for them, but I wanted to be honest! We are staying at Bay Lake Towers this year, I know my dad will be outside to cheer for us, but I’m pretty sure the kids will still be asleep. The monorail is under construction, and won’t be running its normal schedule, but in the past Morgan has ridden the monorail to the start.

Up next…where to eat!
